  2. It’s a great way to express yourself and also a fantastic way to share information with others. Blogging gives you a voice
  3. You become a better person and a better writer. Blogging widens yous reasoning.
  4. The best reason? You can make money doing it! Blogging makes you financially free.

One of the misconceptions about starting a blog is that you need to be a great writer to be successful. Nothing could be further from the truth. People read blog sites to get a personal perspective on things, so most bloggers write in a very informal and conversational style.

In addition, you don’t need to be an expert on your topic in order to have a successful blog. For example, readers of a cooking blog don’t want to read a textbook from a food scientist, they want to hear the experiences of someone who has actually cooked some real meals, mistakes and all.

To be successful as a blogger there is really just one requirement: a passion for your topic. Let’s dive into blogging.

Can I start a blog for free?

Yes, but I don’t recommend it if you want to make money. Why? Five reasons (also on making money blogging):

  • Limited money-making capability. Some free services limit the money you can make unless you “upgrade” to a higher level. You’ll have to pay for that upgrade of course, which defeats the purpose of having a free blog in the first place.
  • Lack of support. Companies don’t offer free blogs out of the goodness of their hearts. They want to make money. If you’re not making them money, they won’t go out of their way to keep you happy. Sometimes this means you’ll have little to no support. Other times you’ll be badgered with offers for their paid-for products.
  • Only basic features. Basic features might not be a problem at first, but as you grow, you’ll feel the pinch. Expandability and flexibility are key. Both are limited with free blogging services.
  • Switching isn’t easy. If you want to switch to a better service later (common for those who start a free blog), it’s a hassle and can be costly. Doing it yourself takes a lot of time and know-how. Hiring someone to do it correctly costs hundreds of dollars.
  • You can’t use others for inspiration. This happens to new bloggers all the time. They start a blog for free. Soon they notice cool features on other blogs that they want too. The problem is, those features aren’t options on their free service.

How to Choose a Winning Blog Topic

Jot down a list of topics that interest you.

These could be your hobbies, topics you suspect are highly profitable, or something random you read in a magazine while waiting to see the dentist.

To be a viable blog topic, you need to be able to answer “yes” to these five questions:

  1. Do any existing blogs on this topic have a Facebook page with more than 10k fans?
  2. Do any blogs on this topic have more than 50k followers on Twitter?
  3. Does Amazon have any books with more than 30 reviews on this topic?
  4. When you search for words and phrases related to this topic, are there any Google ads?
  5. Do any words or phrases related to this topic have more than 100k searches in Google’s Keyword Plannertool?

These questions will let you know whether or not there’s an existing audience for your topic.

Here’s why this is important:

Too many bloggers try to be cute. They hunt for an audience no one else is serving. They think, “if there’s no competition for this topic, creating a successful blog will be easy!”

Wrong.

If there are no competitors, who will link to you? Where will your audience come from? How the heck will anyone find you?

It’s counter intuitive, but the more competition there is in a blogging space, the easier it is for a new blogger to find success in that space.

So, don’t try to be unique. Don’t try to be too clever.

Pick a blog topic that has an existing audience and popular blogs already vying for the audience’s attention.

Step 2 – Choose your preferred blogging platform

Choosing where you want to build blog is pretty much the first thing you have to do. I’m going to take a leap and assume you’ve heard of WordPress, and this is the platform I advocate. It’s massive.

It’s by far one of the biggest blogging platforms in the world, with countless plugins and add-ons and almost infinite ways to design and layout your blog.

There are more than 82 million active users of WordPress = a lot, basically.

There are other alternatives, however, and they are listed below:

  • Blogger – Definitely the next best thing to WordPress.
  • Tumblr – Half social network, half blog. Interesting, and very simple to use.

Even though WordPress is bigger (and probably better) than those two, here are my reasons why you should still go with WordPress:

  1. Super easy set-up and is free to use
  2. Tonsof free themes and layouts (I’m not kidding, there are gazillions).
  3. There’s a massive support forum in case you get stuck (you won’t, but it’s nice to have it there if you need it).
  4. Your blog will be insanely fast and it’ll also lookFunctionality and form – perfect!
  5. People can interact with you easily. Your content can be shared, commented on, and so on.

Self-hosting or a free alternative?

Whoa, slow down there! This is the biggest decision you’ll have to make before we go any further. You need to decide whether to pay for your blog or grab a free one.

WordPress, Tumblr, and Blogger all offer free blogs for anyone. Awesome, right? It’s perfect for those of us who aren’t super serious about blogging. But it does have downsides:

1) You won’t be able to get your OWN domain name

On a free blog, your blog’s web address (your URL) will be butt-ugly. Like, really ugly. In short, create a free blog with any other the above free blog services and it’ll look like this:

  • yourblog.wordpress.com
  • yourblog.blogspot.com
  • yourblog.tumblr.com

I know, ugly right?

2) Limits and more limits

There are some limits to free blogs. You can’t fully monetize it, and you don’t have the possibility to upload all those videos and images you want to show everyone – it’s all limited. Worse still, you won’t even have access to the free themes offered by WordPress.

3) You DON’T OWN your blog

It might sound silly at first, but you don’t actually own your blog. It’s hosted on someone else’s web property and they can delete it if they want to. They have done so in the past, and keep doing it in the future. Which means all your hard work on your blog, all those countless hours of writing blog posts might have vanished within seconds. Sad…

On the other hand, with a self-hosted blog on your own domain name – you are the REAL owner of your blog. You’ll be able to name your blog whatever you want, for example, “YourName.com” or “YourAwesomeBlog.com. You can end it with .com, .co.uk, .net, .org, or virtually any other web suffix. Add to that unlimited bandwidth for videos, images, and content plus the free themes and you have a winning combo.

So how much is hosting and a domain name? Not as much as you’re thinking, fortunately. It usually works out to about $5 to $10 per month, depending on your hosting provider which is less than a couple of coffees.

Now, Step 3 to start a blog (see, we’re moving fast now!)

Step 3: Choose a plan – Essentials for Blogging

Choose a good plan that suits your need and price level. I prefer you go for yearly plans. Its saves times and expenses.

Step 4: Choose a domain name – Essentials for starting a blog

Your domain name is your web address (e.g. Moneyprocesses.com). If you know what domain name you want to use, enter it. If you’re not sure, click the link at the bottom to choose one later. I’m so glad they added the choose later option. Very handy.

What if the domain name I want is taken?

This is very common. Just choose one later by clicking the link. It’s not a bad idea to wait anyway. It’s amazing how much clarity comes after starting!

Lastly, you will need to add your account information and finalize the package info to complete the process. We recommend going with the 36-month plan because that’s the best value.

On this screen, you will see optional extras that you can purchase. It’s entirely up to you whether or not you purchase these, but we generally don’t recommend purchasing them right away. You can always add them later on, if you decide that you need them.

 

Once completed, you will receive an email with details on how to login to your web hosting control panel (cPanel). This is where you manage everything from support, emails, among other things. But most importantly, this is where you install WordPress.

Once you have signed up with Bluehost, you’re able to install your WordPress blog.

Don’t worry, most web hosting companies offer one click install for WordPress blogging platform, so it should be very easy.

  1. Log in to your user profile at Bluehost.
  2. In the “Home” page click on the blue button “WordPress”
  3. WordPress installation starts

 

You can also login to WordPress by simply going to yoursite.com/wp-admin/ directly from your browser.

STEP 6 – Configure your WordPress blog

Once you have your admin account for WordPress all set up (the previous step), you can proceed to visit your new dashboard:

You can change your theme by going to your WordPress dashboard and clicking on Appearance » Themes.

Go ahead and click on the Add New button.

On the next screen, you will able to search from 7,400+ free WordPress themes that are available in the official WordPress.org themes directory. You can sort by popular, latest, featured, as well as other feature filters (i.e industry, layout, etc).

Then, switch the tab to “Popular”:

What you’re going to see are the most popular free WordPress themes in the market. And the best part is that you can install any of them with just one click.

Go ahead and spend a while browsing through this list to find something that really suits your business and the main purpose behind your new blog.

Once you do see a theme you like, you can get it installed onto your blog by clicking on “install” next to the theme’s name, followed by “activate”.

Note: What you’re doing here is just changing the look of your blog. You’re not erasing any of your content. You can change your themes as often as you want, without having to worry about your pages vanishing.

STEP 8 – Add logo, change colours and structure

Even though the WordPress theme that you’ve decided to use already comes with its specific pre-configured design, you can still change parts of it to your liking.

This is all done if you go to Appearance → Customize. What you’ll see is the WordPress Customizer:

Depending on your current theme, you’ll get a different set of options in the sidebar menu, but the most common ones will include:

  • “Site Identity” – this is where you can set your blog title again, plus add a logo image and a site icon (aka. favicon).
  • “Colors” – for adjusting the basic colors used throughout the design.
  • “Header” – for setting your header graphic or image.
  • “Background” – for setting your background graphic, image, or color.
  • “Menus” – more on this later on.
  • “Widgets” – more on this later on as well.
  • And other, theme-dependent settings.

  • If you don’t have a logo yet, you can serch for logo making apps and websites
  • If you don’t have a favicon yet, you can make one with Fiver

Since you probably already have your site title and tagline set up, what you’re going to be doing here is adding your company logo and favicon. Both are quite easy to do:

To add your logo, just click on the “Select logo” button. On the next screen, WordPress will let you know what sort of graphics are acceptable for logos.

After uploading your logo, you should see it inside the live preview window.

To add your favicon, click on the button labeled “Select image” under the “Site Icon” section:

The process is quite similar here as well – WordPress will tell you what sort of an image it’s expecting. However, the thing that’s different here is that once you do add your favicon, it won’t actually get displayed anywhere in the preview. To see it, look at the main top bar of your web browser, next to the blog title. An example from this site:

Depending on the theme you’re using, you will see a different set of options in this section of Customizer. Here’s an example from the default theme:

Most commonly, these options will allow you to set a custom image or a solid color to be in the background. Either way, you can get quite interesting effects if you experiment with this long enough.

Step 9. Creating Your First Blog Post 

To write a blog post, click on the Posts » Add New menu in your WordPress dashboard.

You will see an editor area where you can write your first blog post.

WordPress uses a block-based editor where each element is a block. This allows you to create beautiful content layouts for your blog posts.

Once you’re done writing, go ahead and click on the Publish button on the top-right corner of the screen to make your blog post publicly available.

On the posts screen, you will notice several other sections such as Categories and Tags. You can use these to organize your blog posts into sections.

Create New Pages to give your blog usability

Now that you have an idea of what sort of pages you might need, let’s talk about how to actually go about creating them.

Luckily, the process of creating a new page in WordPress is the same no matter what sort of page that is.

Before doing so, you can also set your blog to a maintenance mode, which will prevent others from seeing your unfinished website.

To do that, go to your WordPress dashboard and then to Pages → Add New. What you’ll see is the main page editing screen of WordPress:

There are many different reasons to start a blog and just as many unique goals you may have in mind. Regardless, it pays to have a basic understanding of the broader aspects of how WordPress functions, so that you can control the visual appearance of your blog.

Let’s dig into a few of the bigger picture settings that you can find in your WordPress dashboard.

How to Create a Contact Form in WordPress

Every website needs a contact form. It allows your users to email you directly. Since WordPress doesn’t come with a built-in contact form, you will need a WordPress form builder plugin to add a contact form on your site.

We recommend using the WPForms Lite plugin. It is a free version of the popular WPForms plugin.

You can install the plugin by going to Plugins » Add New page and typing WPForms in the search box. Next, you need to click “Install” and then “Activate”. Upon activation, you need to head over to WPForms » Add New page to create your first form.

This will open the WPForms builder interface.

First, you need to enter a name for your contact form and then click on ‘Simple Contact Form’ template.

WPForms will now create a simple contact form for you with all the required fields. You can click on any field to change it, or add a new field from the left column.

 

Once you are done editing the form, click on the save button at the top right corner and then exit the form builder.

You can now create a new page in WordPress by going to Pages » Add New and call it ‘Contact’. On the edit screen, you need to enter the WPForms block into the editor.

After that, select the form you created earlier from the drop down menu and WPForms will load a live preview of the form in the editor.

You can now save and publish the page and visit it in your browser to see your contact form in action.

First, you need to visit Google Analytics website and sign in using your Gmail account.

Once you are logged in, you can go ahead and sign up for a free Google Analytics account.

You will be asked to provide your information and website URL. After that, you will be presented with your Google Analytics tracking code.

You can stop here because we will be using a plugin to automatically fetch and add this code to your blog (along with setting up proper WordPress tracking).

Switch to your WordPress admin area to install and activate the MonsterInsights plugin. It is the free version of the best Google Analytics plugin for WordPress, and it is the easiest way to add Google Analytics on your site (trusted by over 2 million websites).

Upon activation, you need to visit Insights » Settings page to configure the plugin settings.

On the settings page, click on the ‘Connect MonsterInsights’ button to connect Google Analytics to your WordPress site.

To get started, first you need to install and activate the Yoast SEO plugin. It is the complete WordPress SEO plugin that will help you optimize your blog.

Upon activation, you will see a new menu item labeled ‘SEO’. Clicking on it will take you to the plugins settings page.

The plugin comes with a quick configuration wizard to help you walk through the set up.

Menus have a very special task in WordPress. Basically, they are your best tool for making sure that the pages you’ve created can be found by your readers.

Typically, your blog should have one main menu that’s placed in the main navigation bar. Most visitors will expect to find something like that on your site.

To create a new menu, go to Appearance → Menus. Once there, look through the list of the available pages (the pages you’ve created so far) and click the checkboxes next to the ones that you want to have in your new menu. Then, click on “Add to Menu”. You’ll see your pages listed in the section on the right.

At this stage, you can also drag-and-drop those pages to realign them. When you’re done, you can also select one of the checkboxes under “Display location”. Most commonly, your main navigation location should be listed there – in our case, it’s “Top Menu”.

When we click on the main “Save Menu” button, my menu is going to be set.

4. Change Your Blog Sidebar and Footer – Blogging Credits

Depending on the theme that you’re using, you might have anywhere from zero to a handful of sidebars available + maybe a customizable footer as well.

To tune up what’s displayed in all those areas, we’re going to use WordPress widgets.

In simple terms, widgets are small blocks of content that can be displayed in various places throughout a WordPress blog.

To see what this is all about, just go to Appearance → Widgets.

What you see here are all the different widgets that WordPress gives you. Just to name a few:

  • Archives – a list of all your past blog posts
  • Image – an image of your choice
  • Categories – a list of all your blog categories

  • Search – a search bar
  • Text – a piece of custom text
  • and a lot more

What you can do with all those widgets is place them in one of the predefined widget areas – usually within the sidebar or the footer.

Note: The widget areas that you see in your admin panel depend on the theme that you’re currently using.

For right now, you won’t need a menu until you’ve published your key pages (About, Contact, Hire, Shop, etc), but when you’re ready to create a homepage or footer menu, just go to Appearance > Menus and you can create them in just a few clicks.

  1. In the left-hand navigation pane of your WordPress dashboard, hover over SEO
  2. Click General
  3. Click the Featurestab
  4. Scroll down to the XML sitemapsoption and make sure the switch is toggled to On

You now have an XML sitemap for your blog. Next, we need to give it to Google, Bing, and other search engines.

So before we leave the Yoast SEO plugin, let’s copy the URL of your sitemap:

  1. Click the question mark iconnext to XML sitemaps
  2. Click the See the XML sitemaplink

Your sitemap will open in a new tab in your browser.

Copy the URL in the address bar and save it.

How to Submit Your Sitemap to Search Engines

The steps for submitting your sitemap differs from search engine to search engine. We’ll quickly go over the most popular ones, starting with Google:

  1. Go to Google Search Consoleand sign in using your Google account
  2. In the left-hand pane, select your website

 

Note: If you haven’t yet added your website to Google Search Console, you’ll need to click “Add property” and follow the steps provided before continuing below.

  1. Under Index, click the Sitemapsoption
  2. In the Add a new sitemapsection, enter the URL you saved earlier and click Submit

  1. Log into Bing Webmaster Tools(you’ll need to create an account if you have not yet done so)
  2. Under the My Sitessection, click your website

Note: If you haven’t yet added your website to Bing Webmaster Tools, enter your blog’s URL in the Add a Site section and click the ADD button.

 

  1. In the left-hand pane, click Configure My Siteand choose Sitemaps
  2. Enter the URL of your sitemap in the Submit a sitemapsection and click the Submit button

And that’s it.You’ve successfully submitted your sitemap to Google and Bing.

By default, WordPress sets the links on your blog to the following format:

  • yourdomain.com/?p=123

  1. In the left-hand navigation pane, hover over Settings
  2. Click Permalinks
  3. Under Common Settings, set the option to Post name

Comment On Other Blogs

Find other blogs in your community and engage with them. Using the comment section, introduce yourself and leave engaging and constructive comments. Many will allow you to leave a link to your blog. After creating relationships with prominent bloggers in your community, you will find yourself within their ranks quickly.

Collaborate

Become enmeshed in your blogging community by collaborating with respected members of your field. Collaborating includes guest posting, promoting each other’s blogs and products, and regularly interacting through comments and social media.
